KARACHI: Discarded Rehan Butt made his point by scoring a double in WAPDA’s 6-1 demolition of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in their 59th National Hockey Championship match that was marred by controversial umpiring at the Hockey Club of Pakistan (HCP) on Saturday.
The game started with chaos as both team took a few minutes to settle down and it was WAPDA who went ahead on 7th minute when Imran Khan scored on a rebound off a penalty corner.
Waqas Sharif was causing steer in PAF’s defence with breath-taking runs down the right flank. However, it was from the penalty corner that WAPDA doubled their lead thanks to a fine strike from Aleem Bilal.
WAPDA again attacked from right wing and got their reward when Mohamamd Imran rounded of a fine move on the half-hour to push WAPDA to 3-0 lead going into the break.
The second period hardly brought any respite for PAF as Waqas Sharif got a deserving goal in the 45th minute. Three minutes later WAPDA got another when veteran Mohammad Wasim and Waqas combined to deadly affect to set up an easy goal for Butt.
PAF got a consolation goal two minutes later but their wounds were aggravated three minutes from time when Butt got his second.
Both teams criticised the standard of umpiring, especially of referee Shahid who they felt was awful and did not deserve to be officiating in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Army thrashed Port Qasim 4-1 thanks to a brace from Mohammad Safeer and solo efforts from Shahid Ali Khan and skipper Mohamamd Kashif.
Maznoor got the only goal for Port Qasim. In the early kickoff, NBP eased past PHF Academy 3-0
