KARACHI: Pakistan’s national coach Michel van den Heuvel on Monday threw his weight behind Pakistan Hockey Federation’s (PHF) policy of not allowing over-age players in the ongoing National Hockey Championship.

“It is a good policy because it will help bring forward new and young talent. This will help make a better national side in the near future,” he told reporters here at Hockey Club of Pakistan.

Michel arrived in Pakistan on Monday to ascertain the performance and form of the players ahead of this year’s Olympic Games in London. PHF has made it mandatory for all teams participating in National Championship not to feature players over 30 years of age. However, the players who are a part of the national team or the national camp are exempted.

Michel said that experienced Rehan Butt is being observed by the selection committee members, which was the reason he has been allowed to participate in the championship. In spite of strictly implementing its age-restriction policy, PHF has made an exception for Rehan Butt, who is neither in the national team nor a part of national camp
