KARACHI: Pakistan number one Aqeel Khan survived some anxious moments against youngster Abid Mushtaq before reaching the final of 10th Westbury Open Ranking Tennis Tournament here at the Karachi Club on Thursday.

Aqeel, who won a crucial decider in Pakistan’s Davis Cup tie against Lebanon in Beirut last week, claimed the opening set against Abid 6-2 but was stunned by the youngster, who won the second set 7-6 on a tie-breaker. However, Abid, who was also a part of the Davis Cup team, was unable to match the power and precision of Aqeel in the decisive final set which the top seed won 6-4 to enter the final.

In the title clash, Aqeel will meet old rival Nomi Qamar, who defeated Vinod Das 6-2, 6-4 in a one-sided semifinal. Meanwhile, Talha Zubair blanked Hassaan Siddiqui 6-0, 6-0 to win the boys’ Under-17 title. In the ladies singles semifinals, Hania Naveed defeated Seher Khwaja 6-2, 7-5 while Neha Khan overcame Hajra Nadeem 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
