KARACHI: Only two teams out of eight turned up at the PSB inter-provincial U16 girls’ athletics championship on Monday, ‘The News’ has learnt.
Baluchistan, Kyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit, Azad Kashmir, FATA and Islamabad athletics squads failed to appear.
Sindh Sports Board (SSB) is hosting the event and Sindh Athletics Association is organising it.
The absence of six teams was felt seriously and PSB authorities in Islamabad were informed about the situation which compelled them to postpone the competition with immediate effect and direct the relevant officials to reorganise the event after proper preparations.
The arrangements at PSB’s coaching centre were appropriate but the fiasco occurred due to lack of communication among the provincial sports boards of the country.
The heads of absent provincial teams had, till the last moment, assured that they would participate in the championship, but they took a U-turn at the eleventh hour and made excuses.
Only Punjab’s team reached the PSB Karachi centre where the Sindh team was present to participate in the competition.
When it was confirmed finally that not a single team other than Punjab had turned up, the chief organiser of the championship and president of SAA, Zahid Rizvi, informed the PSB high officials about the situation.
Rizvi told ‘The News’ the PSB director-general Amir Hamza Gillani directed him to postpone the competition and organise it after properly informing all teams. He said the new dates would be announced shortly.
