KARACHI: Almost all the leading boxers of the country won gold medals, but the title winners were not decided after a dispute arose on one of the final bouts of the National Boxing Championship which concluded at the Punjab College, Lahore, on Friday.
‘The News’ learnt that when Qadir Khan from WAPDA won the 60kg fight against Nawaz Dad from Army, the soldiers revolted strongly, saying that they were not treated by the judges fairly.
Before this fight, both WAPDA and Army had been neck and neck on aggregate points and the result of the disputed fight was vital for announcing the overall title winners.
An official of the PBF said that the decision about the winners had been withheld and a committee would be formed to decide the dispute and so the champions.
Mohammad Waseem, the country’s prolific boxer, Aamir Khan, Mohib Bacha, Adnan Hasan, Mir Waiz Khan and Niamatullah clinched gold medals in their respective weight categories.
Barring the disputed bout, according to an unofficial statistics, WAPDA were leading with three gold and two bronze medals. They were followed by Army with two gold medals, three silver ones and one bronze.
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) claimed two gold, three silver and two bronze medals, Navy captured one gold, two silver and five bronze medals, while Police picked one gold, three bronze medals and HEC bagged one silver and three bronze medals.
Balochistan had to be content with two bronze medals while Sindh and Pakistan Rangers had one bronze medal each.
Mohib Bacha from Police was adjudged the best boxer.
