KARACHI: Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) is not likely to be affected by the judgment of the Supreme Court under which all the office-bearers of sports bodies enjoying third tenure stand dismissed as per the national sports policy.
The issue was discussed in detail by the top officials of the POA with its legal advisor Ali Raza in Lahore on Wednesday.
A source told ‘The News’ that the three-member bench of the apex court had told the POA legal advisor Ali Raza during the final hearing on Tuesday that he has been given relief as POA would not be affected by the judgment.
However, the source said that the position of the federations would become clear only after the detailed judgment is received. The source said if the detailed judgment tells something different, then the International Olympic Committee (IOC) could also intervene in the matter and Pakistan could be slapped with a ban as well.
The IOC does not allow political interference in the affairs of its associated units. The POA elections were held in the presence of the IOC observers in February 2012 in which Lt General (retd) Syed Arif Hasan was elected as president for the third consecutive time.
Pakistan Sports Board (PBS) Director General Amir Hamza Gilani told ‘The News’ that the Board has compiled the data of all those officials who would be affected by the Supreme Court verdict and that they would be asked through letters to make their offices in order and amend their constitutions. He said that all this would be done after the detailed judgment was received.
When asked whether the judgment would affect the POA, Gilani said that it would be seen after the detailed judgment was received. But he was quick to add that the Board would press for the implementation of the verdict . “We will receive the judgment in a few days and then we will take action according to the decision of the apex court,” he said.
