KARACHI: Rabia Ashiq, who will participate in the London Olympics, set up a new record as WAPDA won women’s category title in the 44th National Athletics Championship that concluded in Islamabad on Sunday.
Army lifted the men’s category title.
Rabia from WAPDA broke 5000 metres record of Sajida Ramzan (19:07.6) of Army by clocking 19:04.00.
Rabia, who bettered her timings in the 800 metres at the Asian Grand Prix in Thailand recently, performed splendidly in the national event by also taking gold in the 800m and 1500m which earned her the best woman athlete award.
WAPDA topped the table with 423 points (17 gold, ten silver and four bronze medals).
Army ended as the runners-up with 157 points which they got by virtue of one gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.
They were followed by HEC (93 points, two silver, four bronze), Punjab (77 points, three silver, three bronze), Railways (46 points, two gold, two bronze).
KP, Islamabad, AJK and Police failed to get any medal.
Aalia Noor made a new national record in the heptathlon.
Army’s sprinter Liaquat Ali, who will also take part in the London Olympics, finished the event with gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4X100m relay to emerge as the best male athlete.
In men’s category, Army topped the charts with 16 gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals (448 points).
They were followed by WAPDA (215 points) with five gold, five silver and ten bronze medals.
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) ended third with 112 points which they got by virtue of one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Navy (47 points) took two silver and three bronze and HEC (47 points) claimed one bronze.
Railways, Punjab, Balochistan, Islamabad, FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa failed to secure any medal.
Cash prizes were distributed among the medal winners for the first time in the long history of the championship.
The gold medalists were handed over Rs5000 each, the silver medalists went away with Rs3000 each while the bronze medalists got richer by Rs2000.
The best athletes Rabia and Liaquat Ali got Rs10,000 each. Around 700 athletes from record 16 units took part in the slots.
