KARACHI: Chaman’s Afghan FC finished second when Army were held by WAPDA to a goalless draw in a crucial match of the 8th Pakistan Premier Football League held at the Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad, on Thursday.
With the stalemate, Army stretched their points tally to 54 from 29 matches. If they beat Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in their last game at the same venue on December 27, they will still end well behind Afghan FC, who have 57 points with a decent 52-24 goal count. The soldiers have 34-22 to their credit.
But a victory over PIA will ensure Army’s third place in the league. On the other hand, the single point helped four-time champions WAPDA inflate their tally to 48 from 28 games. After the development, Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) have also got a slim chance to end at the third spot if PIA at least play a draw against Army and KESC, who have 50 points from 28 meetings, win their remaining two matches which they are to play against Navy on Friday (today) and the champions Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) on Monday.
Earlier, WAPDA had to bear the brunt of the wrong decision of their administration when they removed their most successful coach Khalid Butt before the start of the marathon. The newly-promoted coach Sharafat failed to gel the side in the absence of Butt, a former international under whose supervision WAPDA not only won several titles at national level. Today’s fixture: KESC v Navy (Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad). |
