Mystery surrounds death of Pakistan’s fastest woman |

KARACHI: Mubeen Akhtar, Pakistan’s fastest woman and promising athlete, died in her house in Lahore on Thursday morning, apparently due to head injuries.
As per media reports she committed a suicide, but her family claimed that it was natural death caused by head injuries. They said she tripped over the staircase in her house. They asked reporters not to probe the case.
But there were rumours among athletes that Mubeen’s death was not an accident and that something was being covered up.
Some of them said that she might have committed suicide owing to some domestic fight. They said it was hard to believe that an athlete of her stature — champion in three different categories — died of a fall over the staircase.
The sports circle of the country viewed this as a great loss for the country’s athletics as it was widely believed that she had a bright future ahead.
Mubeen won three gold medals in 100 metre and 200 metre races and 400 metre relay this year.
She was considered the fastest athlete in the country because of her performance in the recently held 44th National Athletics Championship, in which she won the women’s 100 metre race in a record 12.64 seconds.
She had won the 100 metre race last year as well while representing Wapda. She used to represent the Army but resigned after sustaining injuries. After getting better she started playing for Wapda.
President Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) Muhammad Akram Sahi expressed grief over her death and said that her death was a great loss.
He gave Rs25,000 to the mother of the deceased athlete on behalf of the federation.
“I have some plans to help her family as her father died some time back and they are poor, deserving people,” said Sahi.
It is expected that memorial events might be held to support the family of which Mubeen was the sole bread earner.
