KARACHI: The son of Pakistan’s most accomplished amateur golfer is making his bones as a professional golfer.

Hamza Amin, the Austria-born son of Taimur Hassan – Pakistan Golf Federation’s secretary – is making his presence felt in the Asian Tour Qualifying School Final Stage under progress in Thailand.

The young Hamza, who turned pro last year, played two remarkable rounds of 69 and 66 and is now placed at a joint-third place in the competition. Hamza, who won the 2010 Pakistan Amateur crown, represents Austria – his country of birth.

Meanwhile, Arnond Vongvanij of Thailand rose from his sick bed to fire a superb eight-under-par 64 and tie for the second round lead at the Asian Tour Qualifying School Final Stage on Thursday.

Arnond was still feeling the effects of food poisoning he suffered on Tuesday but recovered in time to share the lead with Englishman Guy Woodman on 11-under-par 133. Overnight leader Yosuke Tsukada of Japan was a further shot back after shooting a 71 while Hamza Amin, Japanese Sushi Ishigaki and Martin Rominger of Switzerland, who shot a 63, were tied in fourth place on 135 at the all-important Final Stage where the top-40 and ties at the end of the week will earn playing rights for the 2012 Asian Tour season.

Starting from the 10th tee, Arnond, a graduate from the University of Florida, turned in a blistering seven-under-par 29 to tie with the second lowest front nine score on the Asian Tour history and ignite his dream of playing on the region’s established Tour.
