KARACHI: Dr Mohammad Ali Shah and Ahmad Ali Rajput were re-elected as president and secretary, respectively, of the Sindh Olympic Association (SOA) on Sunday at the Asghar Ali Shah Stadium, ‘The News’ learnt through reliable sources.

The results of the elections will be officially announced only after permission from the Sindh High Court (SHC) which had the other day allowed SOA to conduct its electoral meeting according to the schedule, but advised it not to announce the results.

Sindh Handball Association had filed a petition in the SHC a few days ago and requested the court for a stay order against the elections on the plea that the SOA officials violated the constitution and that they were involved in corruption.

The association’s secretary Ahmad Ali Rajput appeared in the court on January 6 while the opposing party was represented by Mudassir Arain, the secretary of the Pakistan Netball Federation (PNF).

An observer from SHC watched the whole electoral process. He will submit a report before the court. SOA officials will appear before the court with the whole election details in the next hearing scheduled for January 12. And if the court recognised the elections, then it would be officially announced. Sources said that Dr Mohammad Ali Shah was elected unopposed after the rival group’s candidate Akram Khan avoided the meeting.

Ahmad Ali Rajput won the position of secretary by taking 58 votes against Mohammad Idrees’ 12 votes. Shah, also the Sindh Sports Minister, has been elected as SOA president for the second four-year tenure, Rajput for the third time.

It has been learnt that besides observer from the Sindh High Court, observers from Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Abdul Khaliq Khan and Mohammad Jehangir and from the Sindh Sports Board Raziq Rabbani were also present during the polls.

Sources said that most of the candidates nominated by the losing party had nothing to do with any association. It had also sent the documents of candidates without their signatures.
