LAHORE: With the help of the National Olympic Committee of Pakistan, national skier Muhammad Karim has reached Russia to participate in the Sochi Winter Olympic Games and will get rich exposure to the international conditions while participating amongst the best. “He is fortunate to participate in the Winter Olympics as the Ski Federation of Pakistan made a request to the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) much after the accreditation deadline was passed,” a spokesman for the POA told Daily Times on Friday.

“In fact with just a few days to go, POA president Lt Gen (r) Syed Arif Hasan and his team made all out efforts to ensure this bright star of Pakistan does not miss this chance due to some petty politics. The POA chief personally contacted the concerned officials to ensure that all procedures were completed in time and just about managed to get a slot for the skier,” added the POA spokesman.

Arif Hasan said he was very pleased to see a national athlete who had already qualified for the Winter Olympics, participating in this top event of the world. “Depriving him of this chance would have been not only very disappointing for Karim but also a very discouraging message for all national athletes. The Ski Federation of Pakistan took the right decision which was based on the interest of skiers and opted for the right course,” Arif Hasan said. Air Marshal Syed Athar Hussain Bukhari, the president of the Ski Federation of Pakistan, is the chef de mission.
