KARACHI: National champion Shabbir Iqbal continued his steady form in the Rashid D Habib Golf Tournament here at Karachi Golf Club on Wednesday for a slim one-shot lead at the end of the second round.

Even though he was overshadowed by the duo of Muhammad Munir and Afsar Ali in the second round, Shabbir shot a four-under 68 for an aggregate of 137 that makes him the favourite to win the title in the million-rupee event sponsored by Bank Al-Habib at the KGC on Thursday (today).

The weather continued to be windy and chilly during the morning. However, some excellent sunshine raised the mercury as the day proceeded. Islamabad’s Munir and Afsar Ali of Karachi Port Trust scored the best scores of the day with 66 each.

Munir fired eight birdies that helped him grab the second place on the leader-board with an aggregate of 138. Afsar, who had a disappointing first-round score of 74, hit six birdies in a bogey-free round of 66 to take the fourth spot behind Shahid Javed Khan.

Shabbir, meanwhile, fired six birdies in an excellent round of 68 to bring him a step closer to winning the crown. Also finishing with a round of 68 was Nisar Hussain. Pakistan’s former national champion Ghulam Nabi continued to lead with a gross of 147 in the seniors’ category.

The three-day tournament will conclude today. Vice Admiral Abbas Raza, President KGC, will be the chief guest for the prize distribution ceremony
