We need Zeeshan: Salman Back To Main

KARACHI: Seasoned Pakistan goalkeeper Salman Akbar on Tuesday said that the national side needs the experience of Rehan Butt and Zeeshan Ashraf for this summer’s London Olympics.

Salman, who is representing SSGC in the ongoing National Hockey Championship, praised the decision of Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to give special permission to Butt for proving his form and fitness in the event.

But Salman said that PHF should also consider the idea of giving a similar opportunity to Ashraf, the former Pakistan captain, to bolster Pakistan’s defence. “Our defense in not weak but Ashraf’s presence will make a big difference in further strengthening it as he remains an important player like Butt especially for a mega event like the Olympics,” Salman told ‘The News’.

Salman’s commitment in Dutch league has made his place uncertain in Pakistan’s starting lineup as young goalie Imran Shah has done well in his absence which has lead to speculations that Salman’s days in national colours could be numbered.

However, Salman, who was the star performer in the 2010 Asian Games where Pakistan won the gold, quashed such rumours saying that they both remain a part of national setup. “Imran Shah has done well and he is Pakistan’s future but to say that my days are numbered will not be correct,” he said.

Speaking on a different issue, Salman played down fears that too many international matches might leave Pakistani players burnt out ahead of the Olympic Games. “We have a highly professional coach in Michel van den Heuvel, who makes sure that players peak at the right time and do not get worn out in the training camp because he keeps focus on the tournaments ahead,” he said.
