KARACHI: The Green-shirts are still in the race for a semifinal berth in the hockey event of Olympics, as a victory against South Africa and a draw against Australia would give them a chance, said former Olympian Hasan Sardar on Saturday.

 

“Pakistan have lost only one match in the tournament. Victories against South Africa and Australia would secure them a place in the semifinals. But beating Australia would be an arduous task and expecting such feat of them would be unjustified because Australian are super-fit and are in super form. They are the hot favorites,” Hasan Sardar told PPI.

 

Pakistan lost their third match 4-1 to Great Britain.

 

Hasan said that Pakistan must register a comprehensive win against South Africa and draw their match against Australia to stay in contest for a semifinal berth.

 

“Two draws and two victories will give the Green-shirts eight points. But Pakistan will also have to look at other results in the group matches, which could enable them to qualify for semifinals. It is still to be seen who the number two team is going to be. Great Britain still have to play against Australia. Australia also need a victory out of its two matches to confirm its place in the semifinals,” Hasan explained.

 

He said the players need to lift their morale as they looked completely disorganised after conceding a goal in the game against Great Britain.
