KARACHI-Top seed Aqeel Khan beat his younger brother Yasir Khan in the final of men’s singles in Subh-e-Nau National Tennis Tournament on Sunday.
Aqeel defeated Yasir by 7-5, 7-6 in 150 minutes. In women’s singles final top seed Saba Aziz from Islamabad faced an upset defeat at the hands of unseeded Iman Qureshi. The score was 7-6, 6-4.
“Playing against your brother definitely means for me a low-energy-level match, yet it was wonderful that I have got some practice before going to participate in a few international events in Dubai and Bahrain I have sent entries for,”
To a question, he said he is hopeful of participating in the Davis Cup and Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) should take a stand for a neutral venue option as it is their right.
On the other hand, winner of the women’s singles final unseeded Iman Qureshi said “I couldn’t believe that I have defeated the top seed, and I tell you it was such a wonderful experience for me.” She informed that she is going to participate in a national tennis tournament at Faisalabad, and she at the moment doesn’t have plans to play at the international levels.
With the prize money of Rs 0.2m the Subh-e-Nau tournament ended on Sunday. The winners of the different categories of the tournament were Aqeel Khan and Jalil Khan in men’s doubles final who defeated Heera Ashiq and Yasir Khan 6-2, 6-0; Adil Kohari of Karachi in Under 18 category who defeated Mohammad Babar of Lahore 6-3, 3-0. Babar retired in the second set.
In the category of Under 14 Naufil Kaleem from Islamabad won over Dawar Rehan of Karachi by 6-1. 6-4. The tournament had 16 entries in women’s singles matches from all over the country and it was open championship.
