LAHORE: The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Pakistan, also known as Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), on Thursday launched its new website to provide update information regarding the NOC and its affiliated national sports federations. “We have developed a major source of information regarding Pakistan sports for our own people and sports lovers around the globe,” POA chief Lt Gen (r) Syed Arif Hasan told media after the POA executive committee meeting at a local hotel here. Also present on the occasion were POA secretary general Muhammad Khalid Mahmood and Pakistan Federation Baseball president Shoukat Javed.

The POA chief briefly gave a rundown of the website that can be visited or accessed at www.nocpakistan.org and said it would cater the need of information seekers about what was happening in sports in Pakistan. He praised the work done by Dr Rizwan Basharat of Absorb Technologies for developing the modern website. “It is just a good beginning and we will be taking measures to make our website one of the best in Asia with passage of time,” he maintained. Arif said the site would also become a source of revenue generation by getting the attention of sponsors and the POA had chalked out a plan to market it in a professional way.

He said fund generation was vital to keep the sports culture alive with the continuation of ongoing sports activities and the POA was fully committed to play its due role in the overall development of sports in the country.

While giving details about the executive committee meeting, the POA president said the house fixed the dates of a number of national sports events besides taking other important decisions.

“So far the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not yet allocated wild cards to Pakistan for the London Olympics and we expect to get wild cards by end of next month,” he added. To a question regarding parallels bodies in the national sports federations, Arif said the POA arbitration committee, hearing the case of a dispute in the Pakistan Cycling Federation, would give its recommendation in a month’s time after which the issue would be resolved. “It is not just cycling alone, there are three to four other national sports facing the same problem. We are working on it to settle the disputes in a legal and amicable way and ensure a smooth working in the national federations.” He informed that Inter Provincial Games would be held in the end of June in Quetta. “The POA sports commission, headed by NWFP sports minister Syed Aqil Shah, was the assigned the task to finalise the dates of the national events and it has done the job in a very professional manner with the cooperation of the provincial Olympic bodies,” he said.

Arif said National Games would be held from October 21-27 in Lahore under the aegis of the Punjab Olympic Association. “Similarly the National Beach Games will be held next year in Sindh,” he concluded.
