KARACHI: A few talented squash players of Sindh, including girls, are to take part in international events that are being held in the coming months, ‘The News’ has learnt.
Hammas Ahmed is going to take part in Milo All Star Junior Squash Championship to be held from May 28 to June 2 at Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. He won this tournament in U11 category in 2010. This year he is contesting in U13 category.
“I am hoping that I will be able to win in this category too. This tournament will be a good experience for me as after this I am going to take part in Asian Junior Championship to be held from June 18-23,” he said.
Kashif Khan has sent an entry in an international event to be held in Kuwait in June. “I am expecting that I will get to play in this event. I am trying hard to bring back my international ranking which has come down to 296 owing to a back injury. I could not play for two years due to that,” he said.
Zahab Kamal has recently won Jordan Junior Open in the category of U19. “We need support from the government, and we need international exposure too. Since only a few girls are playing this sport because of lack of support,” she said.
Zahab reached the semifinals of Nepal Open Senior championship in 2010. “I am currently Pakistan’s number 3 in juniors’ rankings. I am looking forward to become national number one,” she hoped.
Miral Sheikh is ranked number seventh in national juniors’ ranking. She is going to participate for the first time in Milo championship in Malaysia in U15 competitions. “This tournament will be a very good experience for me. After this I am planning to play one to two international events a year,” she said.
