Kookaburras top their group with rout of Pakistan Back To Main

AUSTRALIA will take on Germany in an Olympics semi-final showdown after a seven-goal rout of Pakistan to top Group A.

The Kookaburras were more clinical and polished in front of goal after previously giving up leads against Argentina and Great Britain.
While impressive in victory, coach Ric Charlesworth warned the team will have to be prepared for a more physical challenge from the Germans.
Against Germany, they're physically fitter and stronger (than Pakistan), I don't know if it tells us anything other than we opened up the game with good play."
The Kookaburras' win comes after a shattered Hockeyroos outfit was bundled out of the tournament on goal difference.
Charlesworth said the team was determined to ensure they avoided the same fate.
Chris Ciriello, Mark Knowles and Liam De Young led the way with first half goals and Pakistan had no response, failing to earn a penalty corner and managing only a handful of shots.
Pakistan had been in the hunt for the semi-finals, standing just one point behind Australia before the game.
The Netherlands have beaten Germany to top Group B, meaning it will be the Germans who stand in the way of the Kookaburras making the gold medal game on Thursday.
"I would have been happy to get a draw today, the scoring it doesn't matter.
"We know we have to play Germany and we have a tough task ahead of us.
"I played in two teams that were undefeated in the round games and weren't able to go on, it's a separate tournament (now)."
Glenn Turner sealed the win with Australia's seventh goal, but Charlesworth admitted niggling injuries may yet prevent him from playing in the semi-finals.
"He's had little niggling things all along and that's another one," he said.
"Hopefully it will be sorted out in a day or two, but we can't really tell (at the moment)."
Australia's led two-nil in a pre-Olympics practice match against Germany before star striker Christopher Zeller led a spirited revival for the game to finish in a two-all draw.
